District Council 9 of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades is an organizational of painter, decorators, wall covers, drywall finishers, sign painters, metal polishers, bridge & structural steel painters, civil service painters, lead abatement workers, glaziers & architectural metal glassworkers, paint makers, paint makers and allied trades.

We are a membership run organization. Leaders are elected by the membership and each local union as council delegates who represent them at monthly council delegate meetings. Our unity makes us stronger and together we are dedicated to securing and improving wages, benefits, and overall working conditions, not only for ourselves, but also for our families and future generation to come.

Members of District Council 9 are trained with technical skills that stay with them for the lifetime of their careers. By paying fair wages and benefits, the trade enables them to be active members of their communities, to own homes and to send their children to schools in our neighborhoods. Our trades people live in all five boroughs of New York City and the greater metropolitan area. They understand the value of community involvement and giving back to New York, both by contributing to its tax base and supporting charities and organizations throughout the region. We provide valuable opportunities to thousands of New Yorkers each year, granting over _700_ individuals who enter our apprentice program access to our highly sophisticated trade. District Council 9 represents the diversity of our region and is comprised of men and women from a wide array of races, ethnicities and cultural backgrounds, with minorities and women representing _70_% of our apprentices.

Safety and Health Training

Safety and health training is essential to a long and satisfying career in our trades. A worker who is able to work safely is an asset to his or her employer, a benefit to coworkers, and likely to be a thorough and dedicated worker in other respects as well. We have developed extensive health and safety courses covering all of our trades and crafts. We stress compliance to rules and regulations and continue to improve and expand the content of our safety and health training as new information becomes available. Members are required to keep their safety and health in compliance and attend classes regularly.

Continuing Education

District Council 9 offers education and training to keep our members working, now and in the future. This means providing opportunities for continued Journey person training after completing the apprenticeship program. Skill training is continuously available to all members who want to perfect their techniques.

The Finishing Trades Institute of New York has recently been accepted into the award-winning AIA Continuing Education Systems as one of their newest Registered Providers, network of providers who offer quality continuing education to AIA architect members, and other design professionals worldwide.
